ABC’S REFERS TO THE THREE KINDS OF PIECES I WRITE ONLINE.
I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to find a technical/objective difference between an article, blog, and column. There don’t seem to be any defined, even though obvious differences exist. Also, I can’t constrain my writing to one of the three. So I’ve come up with a system:
I’m going to rotate them by week, in ABC order. They don’t follow any particular word count guidelines. Here is how I define them:
ARTICLES: Researched, topic-specific pieces that revolve around a (typically theoretical) subject. They will be posted MONTHLY.
BLOG ENTRIES: The other extreme. Just chatting about the topic at hand. This also encourages you guys to comment (and even argue with me, if you want). Similar to a typed version of a radio talk show. They will be posted WEEKLY.
COLUMNS: Between the two extremes above. In a nutshell, they’re like an article for the layperson: they center on a specific topic but are less theoretical and are geared toward the general public. They will be posted BI-WEEKLY.
